How carbon monoxide poisoning can affect your health?

Overview

Carbon monoxide poisoning occurs when carbon monoxide builds up in the bloodstream. If there is too much carbon monoxide in the air, the body replaces the oxygen in the red blood cells with carbon monoxide. This can cause serious tissue damage and even death.

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas produced by burning gasoline, wood, propane, charcoal, or other fuels. Improperly ventilated equipment and engines, especially in confined or confined spaces, can accumulate dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.

Symptoms

Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include:

  • Breathing problems, including shortness of breath, shortness of breath, or rapid breathing
  • Chest pain (which can come on suddenly in people with angina)
  • Coma
  • Confusion, confusion
  • Contractions
  • Getting dizzy
  • Sleeping state
  • Syncope
  • General weakness and weakness

Treatment

Upon arrival at the hospital, treatment may include:

Breathe in pure oxygen. In the emergency room, you can breathe pure oxygen with a mask over your nose and mouth. This helps oxygen reach organs and tissues. If you can’t breathe independently, a machine (a ventilator) can live for you.

Time spent in a pressurized oxygen chamber. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is often recommended. This treatment is breathing pure oxygen in a room where the air pressure is 2-3 times higher than usual. This ensures that carbon monoxide in the blood is replaced with oxygen.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can be used in severe carbon monoxide poisoning. It helps protect heart and brain tissues, which are particularly vulnerable to carbon monoxide poisoning injuries. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy may also be offered to pregnant women, as the fetus is susceptible to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an inert gas with no odour or colour. It’s found in heaters’ combustion (emission) fumes, among other places. Read more about it on Healthline.com
