Body Dysmorphic Disorder and Symptoms

Body dysmorphic disorder

Body dysmorphic disorder is a mental health condition. A person with BDD is consumed with thoughts about an imagined or very mild defect in their body. The obsession interferes with their work, school, home and social life. Treatment may include psychotherapy and medication.

Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder include:

  • Too obsessed with apparent imperfections that are invisible or unimportant to others
  • A strong belief that you are ugly or deformed in appearance
  • Belief that others pay particular attention to your appearance or make fun of you negatively
  • Take actions to correct or hide perceived imperfections that are difficult to resist or control, such as frequent mirror checks, grooming, and skin picking.
  • Trying to hide perceived imperfections in style, makeup and clothing
  • Always compare your appearance with others

Treatment

Treatment of body dysmorphic disorders usually includes the following combinations:

Psychotherapy (or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, CBT): Individual counseling focuses on changing a person’s thoughts (cognition) and behavior. Through treatment, they correct their thoughts about flaws and reduce their compulsive behavior.

Exposure and response prevention: ERP uses thoughts and real-world situations to prove a person’s point of view is wrong.

Dosing: Antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) can help treat body dysmorphic disorders.

Group/Family Therapy: The key to successful treatment is family support. The family learns to understand body dysmorphic disorders and to recognize signs and symptoms.

The pandemic has pushed people into staying in their homes for almost two years now. Since the surge of COVID-19, research says that front-facing cameras have already distorted the self-image of people. A new follow-up study was released suggesting that body dysmorphic disorder in many people during the pandemic would not go away any time soon. You can read more about it on Sciencetimes.com
