How asbestosis can affect your health?
What is Asbestosis?
Asbestosis is a chronic lung disease caused by the inhalation of asbestos fibers. Prolonged exposure to these fibers can cause scarring and shortness of breath in lung tissue. Symptoms of asbestosis range from mild to severe and usually appear several years after continuous exposure.
How does asbestos affect my health?
Breathing asbestos fibers can cause asbestos, lung cancer, and mesothelioma. The risk of contracting these diseases increases with the number of fibers inhaled, and smoking increases the risk of lung cancer from inhaling asbestos fibers. People with health problems from inhaling asbestos are usually exposed to high levels of asbestos for extended periods. Symptoms of these diseases usually appear about 20 to 30 years after initial asbestos exposure.
Symptoms of Asbestosis
The effects of long-term asbestos exposure are usually detected only 10-40 years after initial exposure. Signs may vary in severity. Signs and symptoms of asbestos include:
- Dyspnea
- Persistent dry cough
- Loss of appetite during weight loss
- The fingertips of the limbs are wider and rounder than usual (stick)
- Chest compressions or pain
Treatment of Asbestosis
Your doctor may recommend some medications to relieve breathing and the discomfort associated with asbestosis. Common medications include over-the-counter cough drops and cough syrups. If desired, they can be replaced with products with higher prescription strength.
Common drugs for treatment:
Bronchodilator (inhaler)
Inhalers, usually prescribed for asthma patients, can help relax the muscles of the airways and provide relief. The most common registered brands include Maxair, Ventolin, Serevent, Proventil, Primatene, Accu-Hale, and Xopenex.
Treatment of thin secretions
Many drugs can dilute the secretions and open the airways. One of them is guaifenesin, which relieves cough. Maintaining adequate hydration with drinking water is the most effective way to do this.
Extra oxygen
Oxygen may be prescribed to promote breathing and air to the lungs. Oxygen is transferred from the tank via a plastic tube with two teeth that fit the nostrils.
Antibiotics
When asbestosis surgery is performed, antibiotics may be prescribed to treat or reduce the risk of infection.
Asbestosis is the name given to a lung disease that results from breathing in asbestos. Sadly, about 1000 people die from this disease every year in the U.S. This material is long-lasting and famed for its insulating properties. You can read more about it on wrcbtv.com
