How cardiac arrest can affect your health?

Cardiac arrest

Cardiac arrest is severe heart disease. The word arrest means to stop or stop. In cardiac arrest, the heart stops beating. It is also known as sudden cardiac death.

Electrical pulses control your heart rate. When these impulses change patterns, the heartbeat becomes irregular. This is also known as arrhythmia. Some arrhythmias are slow, while others are fast. Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart rhythm stops.

Symptoms

Symptoms of sudden cardiac arrest are sudden and dramatic and include:

  1. Sudden collapse
  2. No pulse
  3. No breathing
  4. Loss of consciousness

Cool

Other signs and symptoms may occur before sudden cardiac arrest. These include:

  1. Chest discomfort
  2. Shortness of breath
  3. Weaknesses
  4. Rapid heartbeat, fluttering or throbbing heart (palpitations)

However, the sudden cardiac arrest often happens without warning.

Treatment

Treatments include:

Medication. Doctors use various antiarrhythmic drugs for the immediate or long-term treatment of arrhythmias or possible complications of arrhythmias. A class of drugs called beta-blockers is commonly used by people at risk for sudden cardiac arrest.

Other medications that can be used to treat the condition causing the arrhythmia to include angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and calcium channel blockers.

Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD). Once your condition has stabilized, your doctor will recommend an ICD, a battery-operated unit that can be placed on your body near your left collarbone. One or more lead wires from the ICD reach the heart via the veins.

The ICD continuously monitors the rhythm of the heart. When it detects a plodding rhythm, it adjusts the heart rate like a pacemaker. When it detects a dangerous change in the heart’s rhythm, it sends a low-energy or high-energy shock to return the heart to its normal rhythm.

Coronary angioplasty. This procedure can open blocked coronary arteries, freeing blood flow to the heart and reducing the risk of serious arrhythmias. Long, thin tubes usually run through the arteries in the legs and reach the streets of the blocked heart. The catheter is equipped with a special balloon tip that inflates briefly to open the occluded artery.

At the same time, a metal mesh stent may be placed in the artery to keep the route open for a long time and restore blood flow to the heart. Coronary angioplasty can be done at the same time as coronary catheterization. This is a procedure that doctors perform to find narrowed arteries in the heart.
