How Dengue Fever can affect your health?

Dengue

Dengue fever (pronounced dengue) is a painful, debilitating mosquito-borne illness caused by four closely related dengue viruses. These viruses are associated with the viruses that cause West Nile infection and yellow fever.

An estimated 400 million people worldwide get dengue fever each year, and about 96 million are sick.

Symptoms

Symptoms that usually begin 4 to 6 days after infection and last up to 10 days include:

  • Sudden high fever
  • Terrible headache
  • Pain behind the eyes
  • Severe joint and muscle pain
  • Weakness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Skin rash that occurs 2-5 days after fever

Treatment

There are no specific medications to treat dengue infections. If you suspect you have dengue, you should use pain relievers containing acetaminophen and avoid drugs containing aspirin, which can aggravate bleeding.

You also need to rest, drink plenty of fluids, and see a doctor. If you feel sick within the first 24 hours after your fever subsides, you should go to the hospital right away to check for complications.

But for milder forms, treatment includes:

Prevent dehydration: High fever and vomiting can cause dehydration. People should ideally drink clean bottled water, not tap water. The hydration salt also helps replenish water and minerals.

Pain relievers such as Tylenol and Paracetamol: This helps reduce fever and relieve pain.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin and ibuprofen are not recommended as they can increase the risk of internal bleeding.

Dengue fever is characterised by a rapid rise in temperature that lasts 2–7 days and is often accompanied with headache, flushing, retro-orbital pain and/or rash, myalgia, weakness, rash, and itching. Some signs suggest whether the patient is getting better or worse. Read more about it on indianexpress.com
