How many calories should I eat a day?

Calories are a metric for how much energy is contained in a food or beverage. The following things influence the amount of energy you’ll need:

Adult women should consume 1,600 to 2,400 calories per day, depending on their height and weight.Men consume somewhat more calories, ranging from 2,200 to 3,200 calories per day.

The normal woman should consume approximately 1,500 calories per day to shed one pound per week and 2,000 calories per day to maintain her weight. The average man requires 2,000 calories per day to lose one pound per week and 2,500 calories per day to maintain his weight.

Calories to gain weight:

To acquire weight, you must consume more calories than your body burns. If you want to gain weight slowly, aim for 300–500 calories per day above your maintenance level, or 700–1,000 calories if you want to gain weight quickly.
