Job Description: Pulmonary Function Technicians, also known as Respiratory Function Technologists, specialize in conducting tests that measure lung capacity, volume, gas exchange, and flow rates. These professionals are critical in helping diagnose respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). They work closely with pulmonologists to provide accurate data that informs diagnosis and treatment plans.

Key Responsibilities: Conduct pulmonary function tests (PFTs) including spirometry, lung volume measurement, gas diffusion tests, and airway resistance tests.
Prepare and maintain the equipment used for testing, ensuring it’s calibrated and functioning correctly.
Instruct patients on how to perform tests, ensuring accurate and reliable results.
Monitor patients for adverse reactions during testing.
Record, analyze, and interpret test results for pulmonologists to review.
Perform regular maintenance and troubleshooting of pulmonary function testing equipment.
Educate patients about the testing process and what their participation involves.

Education Qualifications: An Associate’s degree or higher in Respiratory Therapy or a related field is often required.
Certification as a Pulmonary Function Technologist by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) may be required or preferred.
Understanding of respiratory care equipment and testing procedures.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification may be necessary.

Key Attributes: Attention to detail and precision in conducting tests and recording results.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively instruct and comfort patients during tests.
Technical aptitude for operating and maintaining complex medical equipment.
Analytical skills to interpret test results and identify any issues during testing.
Patience and empathy to work with patients who may be experiencing discomfort or anxiety.

About the Role: Conduct diagnostic tests in hospitals, outpatient clinics, and specialized respiratory diagnostic labs.
Collaborate with respiratory therapists, pulmonologists, and other healthcare professionals to support patient diagnosis and treatment plans.
Contribute to research studies aimed at improving diagnostic techniques and treatments for respiratory conditions.
Educate patients and healthcare staff on the importance and procedures of pulmonary function testing.
Play a role in public health initiatives by participating in screenings and health education programs focused on respiratory health.
