Job Description: Gastroenterology Technologists, also known as GI Technologists or Endoscopy Technicians, are allied healthcare professionals specialized in assisting gastroenterologists and other medical staff during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures related to the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. They play a crucial role in ensuring the safety, comfort, and efficiency of endoscopic procedures, including gastroscopy, colonoscopy, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).
Key Responsibilities: Equipment Setup: Prepare and set up endoscopy equipment, instruments, and accessories for gastrointestinal procedures, ensuring proper functioning and sterilization according to established protocols.
Patient Preparation: Assist with patient preparation for endoscopic procedures, including explaining the procedure, obtaining informed consent, and ensuring patient comfort and safety throughout the process.
Procedure Assistance: Provide direct assistance to gastroenterologists and other medical staff during endoscopic procedures, including passing instruments, managing equipment, and monitoring patient vital signs.
Scope Handling: Handle and maneuver endoscopes and related devices during procedures, following aseptic techniques and infection control procedures to prevent contamination and ensure patient safety.
Patient Monitoring: Monitor patient vital signs, oxygen saturation, and conscious sedation levels during procedures, responding promptly to any changes or adverse events and alerting medical staff as necessary.
Specimen Collection: Assist with the collection and labeling of tissue samples, biopsies, and other specimens obtained during endoscopic procedures, ensuring accurate documentation and proper handling for laboratory analysis.
Post-procedure Care: Provide post-procedure care and monitoring to patients recovering from endoscopic procedures, including assessing vital signs, monitoring for complications, and ensuring patient comfort and safety.
Documentation and Record-keeping: Maintain accurate and detailed records of procedures, including patient information, procedural details, and findings, in accordance with regulatory and institutional requirements.
Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and disinfection of endoscopy equipment, scopes, and accessories, following manufacturer guidelines and infection control standards.
Patient Education: Provide basic education to patients and their families regarding post-procedure care instructions, dietary restrictions, and potential side effects or complications of endoscopic procedures.
Education Qualifications: Education: Completion of a formal training program in gastroenterology technology or endoscopy technology from an accredited institution is typically required.
Certification: Certification as a Certified Gastroenterology Technician (CGT) or Certified Endoscopy Technician (CET) may be preferred or required by some employers.
Clinical Experience: Prior experience working in a healthcare setting, particularly in gastroenterology or endoscopy, is beneficial.
Medical Knowledge: Basic understanding of gastrointestinal anatomy, physiology, and pathology, as well as common endoscopic procedures and equipment.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting endoscopy equipment, instruments, and accessories, as well as basic computer skills for documentation and record-keeping.
Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with patients, healthcare providers, and other members of the endoscopy team.
Attention to Detail: Attention to detail and accuracy in performing tasks, documenting procedural information, and following established protocols and safety procedures.
Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for long periods, lift and move equipment, and assist with positioning and transferring patients during procedures.
