Orthopedic nurses specialize in the care and treatment of patients with musculoskeletal disorders, such as arthritis, broken bones, joint replacements, fractures, and osteoporosis.
They work closely with orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care aimed at patient recovery and rehabilitation.

Patient Care: Provide preoperative and postoperative care for patients undergoing orthopedic surgery. This includes wound care, pain management, mobility assistance, and monitoring for signs of complications.
Education: Teach patients and their families about post-surgery care, rehabilitation exercises, prevention of further injury, and ways to promote bone health.
Rehabilitation Support: Assist patients in performing exercises or movements prescribed by physical therapists to ensure proper recovery and to prevent complications.
Medication Administration: Administer medications, including pain relief and antibiotics, and educate patients about their medications.
Assessment and Monitoring: Continuously assess and monitor patient vital signs, pain levels, and surgical sites for signs of infection or complications.

Education: Completion of an accredited nursing program (Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in nursing).
Licensing: Must pass the NCLEX-RN to obtain licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN). Additional certification in orthopedic nursing (ONC) is preferred but not required.
Experience: Experience in orthopedics, surgical nursing, or a related field is beneficial. New graduates may receive on-the-job training in orthopedic care.

Strong Clinical Skills: Knowledge of musculoskeletal system, competency in nursing procedures, and ability to manage post-surgical patients.
Communication Skills: Ability to effectively communicate with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
Compassion: Must be empathetic and supportive, providing emotional support to patients and families.
Physical Stamina: Orthopedic nursing can be physically demanding, requiring the ability to assist patients with mobility and perform physically taxing tasks.
