Environmental Services Supervisors are essential figures in healthcare facilities, responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the environmental services department.
This includes managing the housekeeping and janitorial staff to ensure that all areas of the facility are clean, sanitized, and maintained in accordance with health and safety standards.
Their role is crucial in preventing the spread of infections and maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for patients, visitors, and staff.

Staff Supervision: Direct and supervise the work of housekeeping and janitorial staff, including scheduling, assigning tasks, and monitoring performance to ensure efficiency and high standards of cleanliness.
Training and Development: Conduct training sessions for new hires and provide ongoing training for all staff on cleaning protocols, the proper use of cleaning chemicals and equipment, and compliance with safety and health regulations.
Quality Control: Perform regular inspections of the facility to ensure that cleaning and maintenance meet the established standards. Address any deficiencies immediately and implement corrective actions.
Inventory Management: Manage the inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment. Order supplies as needed while managing the department's budget and ensuring cost-effective operations.
Policy and Procedure Compliance: Ensure that all cleaning and sanitation processes comply with institutional policies, and state and federal regulations regarding environmental hygiene and infection control.
Collaboration: Work closely with other departments, such as infection control and facilities management, to coordinate cleaning efforts, especially in response to outbreaks or increased risk of infections.
Issue Resolution: Serve as the first point of contact for any cleanliness or service-related complaints from patients, visitors, or staff, and resolve issues promptly and effectively.

Educational Background: High school diploma or equivalent; a bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration, business, or a related field is preferred but not required.
Experience: Previous experience in environmental services, housekeeping, or a related field, with a proven track record of supervisory responsibilities.
Skills: Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, effective communication, organizational and problem-solving abilities, and a thorough understanding of cleaning standards and infection control practices.
Certifications: Certifications such as the Certified Healthcare Environmental Services Professional (CHESP) are beneficial.

Leadership: Ability to lead and motivate a team, ensuring high standards of cleanliness and customer service.
Attention to Detail: Keen eye for cleanliness and organization, ensuring every area of the facility meets health and safety standards.
Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective coordination with staff, management, and other departments.
Problem-Solving: Quick thinking and problem-solving skills to address challenges and complaints related to environmental services.
Adaptability: Flexibility to adapt to changing needs, schedules, and priorities, especially in response to health emergencies or outbreaks.
