Job Description: The Head of Biomedical Engineering is a pivotal role within healthcare and research institutions, responsible for overseeing the biomedical engineering department. This position entails leading the development, maintenance, and management of medical equipment and technologies that support patient care and medical research. The individual in this role collaborates closely with medical staff to identify technological solutions, ensures compliance with health and safety standards, and drives innovation in biomedical engineering to improve healthcare outcomes.
Key Responsibilities: Leadership and Management: Direct and oversee the biomedical engineering team, setting goals, managing projects, and ensuring staff development and performance management.
Strategic Planning: Develop and implement strategic plans for the acquisition, utilization, and maintenance of medical equipment and technologies, aligning with the organization’s objectives and budget.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all biomedical equipment and operations comply with national and international standards, regulations, and ethical guidelines.
Innovation and Development: Lead research and development initiatives to introduce new technologies and improve existing medical equipment, enhancing patient care and operational efficiency.
Collaboration and Support: Work closely with medical staff, IT, and other departments to ensure biomedical engineering services meet clinical needs and support patient care effectively.
Vendor Management: Manage relationships with equipment manufacturers and vendors, negotiating contracts, and overseeing the procurement and installation of new equipment.
Maintenance and Training: Oversee the preventive maintenance and repair of medical equipment, and ensure that staff are adequately trained on the safe and effective use of biomedical technologies.
Safety and Quality Assurance: Implement and monitor safety and quality control protocols for biomedical equipment, minimizing risks and ensuring the highest standards of patient care.
Education Qualifications: Educational Background: A master’s degree in biomedical engineering, bioengineering, or a related field is typically required. A Ph.D. or additional qualifications in healthcare administration or management is highly advantageous.
Experience: Extensive experience in biomedical engineering, including significant leadership or managerial experience in a healthcare setting. Proven track record of innovation and project management in the biomedical field.
Skills: Strong leadership and organizational skills, advanced technical knowledge in biomedical engineering, excellent communication and negotiation skills, and the ability to work collaboratively across departments.
Certifications: Certification from a recognized professional body in biomedical engineering or healthcare technology management may be preferred.
