Job Description
- A Hematologist is a medical specialist who diagnoses, treats, and manages diseases and disorders of the blood, bone marrow, and lymphatic system.
- This role involves both clinical and laboratory work, focusing on conditions such as anemia, clotting disorders, leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma.
- The Hematologist plays a vital role in patient care, clinical decision-making, and multidisciplinary collaboration within healthcare teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose and manage benign and malignant hematologic conditions through clinical evaluation and laboratory investigations.
- Interpret hematological tests including blood counts, bone marrow biopsies, and coagulation profiles.
- Develop individualized treatment plans, including chemotherapy, transfusion therapy, and immunotherapy.
- Collaborate with oncology, pathology, radiology, and transplant teams to coordinate comprehensive care.
- Monitor patient progress and adjust treatment strategies as needed.
- Participate in multidisciplinary meetings, tumor boards, and case reviews.
- Supervise and guide junior doctors, residents, and medical students.
- Contribute to clinical research and quality improvement initiatives within the hematology service.
- Maintain accurate medical records and ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards.
- Stay current with advancements in hematology through continuing education and professional development.
Education Qualifications
- Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
- Postgraduate qualification in Internal Medicine followed by specialization in Hematology (e.g., DM, FRCP, FRCPath, or equivalent).
- Board certification or licensure in Hematology from a recognized medical authority.
- Fellowship or advanced training in a subspecialty (e.g., hemato-oncology, bone marrow transplantation) is desirable.
