The ICU Charge Nurse is a senior registered nurse responsible for coordinating clinical operations during assigned shifts in the Intensive Care Unit.
This role provides leadership and support to nursing staff, ensures safe and effective patient care delivery, and serves as a liaison between clinical teams, patients, families, and hospital administration.
The Charge Nurse promotes best practices, enforces policy adherence, and helps maintain a high standard of critical care in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.

Coordinate and supervise nursing care within the ICU during designated shifts, ensuring patient safety and quality care.
Assign nursing staff based on patient acuity, skill level, and workload, adjusting assignments as needed throughout the shift.
Serve as the primary point of contact for physicians, interdisciplinary teams, and administrative staff during shifts.
Support, mentor, and provide clinical guidance to nursing and ancillary staff.
Monitor patient status and collaborate with the care team to address changes in condition, escalate concerns, and intervene as needed.
Ensure timely and accurate documentation of patient care activities, incident reports, and shift summaries.
Maintain proper inventory of supplies and equipment, and coordinate with materials management to address shortages.
Participate in quality assurance initiatives, audits, and compliance with regulatory standards.
Provide direct patient care as needed, particularly in complex or emergency situations.
Promote adherence to hospital policies, infection control standards, and evidence-based ICU protocols.

Registered Nurse (RN) with current, unrestricted licensure in the practicing state or country.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; Master’s degree in Nursing or Healthcare Leadership is an advantage.
Certification in Critical Care Nursing (e.g., CCRN) strongly preferred.
Current BLS, ACLS certification required; PALS or NRP may be required depending on the ICU population.
Minimum 3–5 years of clinical nursing experience in an ICU setting, with at least 1–2 years in a leadership or preceptor role.

Advanced clinical assessment and critical thinking capabilities.
Calm under pressure, with excellent problem-solving and crisis management abilities.
Effective communicator and collaborator across diverse clinical teams.
Detail-oriented and well-organized, with strong time management skills.
Demonstrates professional integrity, empathy, and a commitment to excellence in patient care.
Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR), ICU equipment, and clinical documentation standards.
