Job Description: An Intensivist is a board-certified physician specializing in the care of critically ill patients, typically in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This role involves the comprehensive management of patients with life-threatening conditions, including advanced diagnostics, therapeutic interventions, and coordination of multidisciplinary care. The Intensivist works closely with other physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals to ensure evidence-based, compassionate, and timely care.
Key Responsibilities: Provide direct, round-the-clock medical care to critically ill patients in the ICU.
Perform and supervise advanced procedures, including intubation, central line placement, arterial line insertion, and more.
Lead multidisciplinary rounds and collaborate with nursing, pharmacy, respiratory therapy, and other departments to coordinate patient care.
Develop individualized treatment plans using evidence-based practices and current critical care guidelines.
Respond promptly to emergency situations, such as cardiac or respiratory arrest, and lead resuscitation efforts.
Participate in ICU quality improvement initiatives, morbidity and mortality reviews, and protocol development.
Engage in patient and family communication, providing updates, goals of care discussions, and end-of-life planning when appropriate.
Ensure accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR).
Supervise and educate residents, fellows, or advanced practice providers (APPs), as applicable.
Maintain compliance with hospital policies, professional standards, and applicable laws/regulations.
Education Qualifications: Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) degree from an accredited institution.
Completion of a residency in Internal Medicine, Anesthesiology, Surgery, or Emergency Medicine.
Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine required.
Board certification in Critical Care Medicine (ABIM, ABA, ABS, or ABEM depending on training pathway).
Current and unrestricted medical license and DEA registration.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required.
Key Attributes: Deep knowledge of physiology, pharmacology, and pathophysiology related to critical illness.
