Job Description: Nursing Assistants and Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) play a critical role in the healthcare system by providing basic care to patients in various settings, including hospitals, long-term care facilities, and patients’ homes. These professionals support the nursing staff by performing routine tasks that contribute to the overall well-being and comfort of patients. Their work is fundamental in enhancing the quality of patient care, maintaining safety, and ensuring the smooth operation of healthcare facilities.
Key Responsibilities: Basic Patient Care Assist patients with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, eating, and mobility. Help maintain personal hygiene and comfort of patients.
Vital Signs Monitoring Measure and record vital signs, including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and respiration rates, and report any significant changes to the nursing staff.
Patient Observations Observe and report changes in patients’ conditions and behavior, which are vital for the nursing and medical staff to adjust care plans accordingly.
Assistance with Medical Procedures Under the supervision of nursing or medical staff, assist with certain procedures such as catheter insertion, wound care, and collection of specimens for testing.
Documentation Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including documenting vital signs, input/output records, and other relevant patient information.
Communication and Support Provide emotional support to patients and their families, explaining the purpose of routine care activities and answering questions within the scope of knowledge.
Infection Control Adhere to infection control protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and hand hygiene, to prevent the spread of infection.
Equipment and Room Preparation Prepare and clean patient rooms, change linens, and ensure that rooms are stocked with necessary supplies and equipment.
Education Qualifications: Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of a state-approved nursing assistant training program or a Patient Care Technician program.
Licensure/Certification: Certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Certified Patient Care Technician/Assistant (CPCT/A) may be required, depending on the state and employer. CPR certification is often required.
Experience: Entry-level position; however, previous experience in a healthcare setting can be beneficial.
