Their primary responsibility is to examine, diagnose, treat, and manage diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eye, and associated structures.
Optometrists also play a crucial role in correcting refractive errors by prescribing eyeglasses and contact lenses.

Vision Testing: Conduct comprehensive visual tests to assess sight health, focusing on clarity, vision sharpness, and ability to focus.
Diagnosis: Diagnose eye-related conditions such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, presbyopia, and diseases like glaucoma or cataracts.
Prescription: Prescribe corrective lenses (glasses and contact lenses) and provide advice on visual aids.
Eye Health Management: Provide treatment options and preventative eye care advice, managing conditions such as dry eye syndrome or binocular vision disorders.
Patient Education: Educate patients on eye care and the proper use and care of contact lenses and eyeglasses.
Referrals: Refer patients to ophthalmologists or other health care providers when necessary for further treatment or surgery.
Record Keeping: Maintain accurate patient records as required by law, including details of exams and treatments provided.

Educational Background: Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree from an accredited optometry school.
Licensing: Must be licensed to practice optometry in the relevant state or country, which typically requires passing national written and clinical board examinations.
Experience: Experience in patient care in optometry, although new graduates are welcome in many practices with on-the-job training.
