Job Description: Respiratory Therapists specialize in the assessment and treatment of patients with breathing or other cardiopulmonary disorders. Practicing under the direction of a physician, they assume primary responsibility for all respiratory care therapeutic treatments and diagnostic procedures. Respiratory Therapists are key members of the healthcare team in settings such as hospitals, intensive care units, and home health care, providing critical support for patients ranging from premature neonates to the elderly.

Key Responsibilities: Patient Assessment Evaluate patients’ respiratory conditions through diagnostic tests and physical examinations to develop appropriate treatment plans.
Therapeutic Administration Administer respiratory therapy treatments, including aerosol medications, chest physiotherapy, and oxygen therapy, among others.
Ventilator Management: Manage life support mechanical ventilation systems for patients who cannot breathe independently.
Airway Management Perform endotracheal intubation and maintain open airways for patients who are at risk of respiratory failure.
Patient Education Educate patients and their families on lung health, including smoking cessation, environmental controls, and breathing exercises.
Emergency Response Participate in emergency resuscitation teams, providing vital respiratory care in life-threatening situations.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation Assist in the design and implementation of pulmonary rehabilitation programs to help patients improve their quality of life.
Equipment Maintenance Ensure respiratory therapy equipment is functioning safely and effectively.

Education Qualifications: Education: Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited program.
Licensure/Certification: Must be licensed as a Respiratory Therapist; certification by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) is often required. Advanced certifications such as Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) are preferred.
Experience: Clinical experience in respiratory care, which can include internships or clinical rotations as part of educational training. Experience in intensive care or neonatal/pediatric care is highly valuable.
