Job Description: Respiratory Therapists (RTs) are specialized healthcare professionals trained to evaluate, treat, and care for patients with breathing or other cardiopulmonary disorders. They play a critical role in both emergency and long-term management of patients ranging from premature neonates with underdeveloped lungs to elderly patients with lung disease.
Key Responsibilities: Assess and monitor patients’ respiratory care needs, including diagnostic testing and analysis of blood samples to determine oxygen and carbon dioxide levels.
Operate and manage life support mechanical ventilation systems for patients who cannot breathe adequately on their own.
Perform airway management and clearance techniques to assist with keeping the lungs clear of secretions.
Administer inhaled medications and medical gases (such as oxygen) to assist with breathing and lung function.
Educate patients and families on lung health, including smoking cessation, environmental controls, and techniques to facilitate better breathing.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to develop and implement comprehensive care plans for patients with acute or chronic respiratory conditions.
Education Qualifications: Associate or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited respiratory therapy education program.
Successful completion of the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) exam to become a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT).
State licensure as required, which varies by location.
Continuous education to maintain certification and licensure, and to stay updated on the latest respiratory care practices.

About the Role: Serve as primary caregivers for patients with respiratory conditions, working in settings such as hospitals, clinics, and home health care.
Provide critical support in emergency and intensive care settings, particularly for patients requiring ventilatory support.
Act as educators and advocates for public health, promoting lung health awareness and disease prevention.
Participate in respiratory therapy research and the development of new treatment methodologies.
Work with healthcare technology companies to improve respiratory care devices and equipment.
